To better concurrently address emotional and neuropsychological symptoms common in veterans with comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and history of traumatic brain injury (TBI), we integrated components of compensatory cognitive training from the Cognitive Symptom Management and Rehabilitation Therapy (CogSMART) programme into cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for PTSD to create a hybrid treatment, SMART-CPT (CogSMART+CPT). This study compared the efficacy of standard CPT with SMART-CPT for treatment of veterans with comorbid PTSD and history of TBI reporting cognitive symptoms.. Objective: Many combat veterans struggle with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and hazardous alcohol use and are hesitant to engage in behavioral health services. Combining peer support with an eHealth intervention may overcome many barriers to care. This pilot study investigated the feasibility of adding peer support to a web-based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) targeting PTSD symptoms and hazardous drinking, called Thinking Forward.. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex and difficult-to-treat disorder, affecting 10–20% of military veterans. Previous research has raised the question of whether a non-trauma-focused treatment can be as effective as trauma exposure therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms. This study aimed to compare the non-trauma-focused practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) with prolonged exposure therapy (PE) in a non-inferiority clinical trial, and to compare both therapies with a control of PTSD health education (HE).. Comment. A key challenge in military medicine has been the treatment of the mental health of military service members who have been deployed in operations in recent years. The most effective course of treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been highly debated and is a central focus in the military community because of the large number of service members returning from deployment with PTSD. 1 More than a third of patients with PTSD do not recover even after many years, showing PTSD to be a chronic and costly illness to service members, their families, and society as a whole. 2 Traditional treatment of PTSD has not been uniformly successful because of comorbidities, side-effects of drug therapy, and time and energy needed for psychotherapy. 3 Pharmacotherapy has shown insufficient benefit in the treatment of PTSD, 4 while adherence and the treatment success of various psychotherapies has been disappointing. When patients with PTSD do not respond to traditional treatment, new approaches should be considered. 5. Please contact the library to request a copy of this article - http://bit.ly/1Xyazai

Objective: Several factors may influence the standardized delivery and frequency of behavioral health encounters for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in active duty military settings, potentially impacting the effectiveness of care. This retrospective analysis evaluated the course of treatment among 884 active duty Army service members in routine outpatient care.. Program evaluation data from 451 veterans treated with at least four sessions of prolonged exposure (PE) within a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs outpatient posttraumatic stress disorder program were examined to explore to what degree change by Session 8 predicted achieving meaningful change (MC; 50% reduction on the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale–Self-Report [PSS-SR]) after Session 8.. A year-long tele-therapy pilot study, funded by The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and undertaken by Combat Stress, has shown it to be an accessible, flexible and cost-effective approach to delivering trauma-focused therapies. Tele-therapy provides therapy through a live video connection, over the internet such as Skype.

This naturalistic study of evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in U.S. veterans examined treatment utilization and completion rates, the characteristics of EBPs in an ecologically valid sample, and the factors associated with premature termination. The study is an extension of previous work by Deviva and colleagues (2017), and was conducted in a Department of Veterans Affairs PTSD clinic that included 130 veterans.. Suicide remains a significant public health problem for the United States military. Trauma-related diagnoses such as acute stress disorder (ASD) or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may exacerbate suicide risk, particularly among service members psychiatrically hospitalized following suicide-related events. To date, treatments to address suicide risk and trauma symptomatology among service members within inpatient milieus have been nonexistent. To address this gap, a randomized controlled pilot trial of Post-Admission Cognitive Therapy (PACT) was conducted to evaluate a targeted cognitive-behavioral program among traumatized military personnel (N = 36) hospitalized following a recent suicide attempt.. Intensive delivery of evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is becoming increasingly popular for overcoming barriers to treatment for veterans. Understanding how and for whom these intensive treatments work is critical for optimizing their dissemination. The goals of the current study were to evaluate patterns of PTSD and depression symptom change over the course of a 3-week cohort-based intensive outpatient program (IOP) for veterans with PTSD, examine changes in posttraumatic cognitions as a predictor of treatment response, and determine whether patterns of treatment outcome or predictors of treatment outcome differed by sex and cohort type (combat versus military sexual trauma [MST]).

Objective: Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a mental technique using a mantra to facilitate meditation. TM has a potential for treating symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its clinical efficacy remains to be clarified. This pilot study evaluated the acceptability, preliminary effectiveness, and neurophysiology of TM for veterans with PTSD.. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Group Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice (Jul 19, 2018). DOI:10.1037/gdn0000086
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is 1 of the more prevalent mental health diagnoses for veterans. Group therapy can be an effective and efficient means of treating PTSD, yet the literature exploring treatment outcomes for racial minorities has been mixed and limited. The present study was an evaluation across racial groups of the PTSD Recovery Program, a manualized group therapy implemented at a Veterans Affairs hospital. Data were collected from male veterans ( N = 450) who identified as non-Hispanic White or non-Hispanic African American and participated in a 10-week, combat-related, group therapy program between 2010 and 2014. . Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy (Jul 23, 2018).
Objective: Despite the availability of evidence-based psychotherapy (EBP) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Veterans Health Administration, treatment completion rates are low and not all veterans benefit from these treatments. Understanding factors associated with PTSD EBP completion and symptom improvement is critical to improving completion rates and effectiveness..
